Device for estimating the coordinates (a,b) of the centre O of a perfect circle in an origin reference plane omega (O,O), from a knowledge of the coordinates of a set of noisy points Mk(O) distributed over the periphery CT of this circle, this device employing a so-called least-squares criterion and comprising: - means (3) for extracting the coordinates of the points Mk(O) on the periphery CT of the circle with centre O to be estimated, - calculating means (4, 5, 6, 7, 8) for providing an estimate (â,b) of the coordinates (a, b) of the centre O of the circle to be estimated by employing the said least-squares criterion according to which there is minimised the energy of the difference between, on the one hand, the square of the distance between the points Mk of the periphery and the centre O with the sought-after coordinates, and, on the other hand, the square of the radius R of the circle, This device furthermore comprises: - means (1) for providing the calculating means (4,5,6,7,8) with a value of the radius R of this circle with centre O, - and means (2) for providing the calculating means (4,5,6,7,8) with the coordinates of a point OMEGA which constitutes a primitively known approximation of the position of the centre O of the circle to be estimated.
