PURPOSE:To lead out the S component of a laser beam generated in a laser medium as output and to increase the output by a method wherein the two end surfaces onto or from which a laser beam impinges or is emitted, of the laser medium are respectively covered with each antireflection film against polarized component parallel to the surface onto which the laser beam impinges and a component polarized vertical to this polarization component. CONSTITUTION:A laser beam 1 has totally reflecting surfaces 2 and 2' and two end surfaces 3 and 3', which are slanted to the surfaces 2 and 2' at a certain angle and oppose to each other. The surfaces 3 and 3' are respectively covered with each antireflection film 4 and 4'. The respective reflection factors Rp and Rs of the P component and the S component in the end surface of this element at a time when a laser beam 5 impinged onto the end surface at an incident angle (theta0) are found as a function of the reflection coefficients of the P and S components in the interface between the film 4 and the medium 1. For increasing the ratio of a polarization component, which is utilized for an amplitude of the laser beam, both of the reflection factors Rp and Rs of the P and S components have only to make small and if the antireflection films are formed of a material having refractive indexes to correspond to the incident and emitting angles of the laser beam, both of the Rp and Rs can be made small. |
