PURPOSE:To simply and efficiently obtain (S)-1,3-butandiol of high optical purity from an enantiomeric mixture of the 1,3-butandiol. CONSTITUTION:This method for producing (S)-1,3-butandiol comprises reacting an enantiomeric mixture of 1,3-butandiol with a microorganism, belonging to the genus Gluconobacter or Acetobacter and having the ability to act on the mixture and making (S)-1,3-butandiol selectively remain or a treated substance thereof and then recovering the residual (S)-1,3-butandiol. Gluconobacter oxydans IFO 3171, Gluconobacter frateurii IFO 3254, Acetobacter liquefaciens IFO 12388, etc., are used as the microorganism. |
