The lock for a pivotable cover has a first part fitted firmly to the cover and a second part fitted to the vehicle bodywork. Each of the parts has a lock pin (14), and the second part has a base plate (10) formed with an opening (13) which, upon locking, houses the lock pin. The opening has a first position which the lock pin takes up on normal locking, and a second position to which the lock pin can be pushed after deformation of the vehicle bodywork. The lock pin is maintained in the opening by a manoeuvrable lock arm (20) formed with a first part (21) which, upon locking, blocks the lock arm in the base plate opening in the first position. The lock arm adjacent to the first part is formed with a second part having an opening (22) which encompasses the lock pin, maintaining it in the base plate opening during movement of the lock pin from the first position to the second position.
