PURPOSE:To provide an optical switch whose switching function is not deteriorated by performing heat treatment when and after it is produced, which does not require a long optical switching part and which is constituted so that only the optical switching part needs be exchanged in the case defect is caused in the optical switch. CONSTITUTION:Optical waveguides 13 and 14 are used as a passive transmission path, and a gap 20 is formed between the waveguides 13 and 14 on the same optical axis. A liquid crystal cell 15 is inserted in the gap 20 and the cell 15 is positioned on the optical axis of the waveguides 13 and 14. Only light(TE wave light) having the plane of polarization in parallel with the surface of a substrate 6 is wave-guided in a clad layer 17 and a core layer as the combination of the material of the optical waveguide. Desirably, one or plural lenses are inserted on both surfaces or both sides of the cell 15. |
