<p>PURPOSE:To reduce pumping loss by providing an inlet cam shaft with a variable phase mechanism and a variable compression mechanism to vary the displacement of a combustion chamber so that a timing difference between the drive of the inlet valve and the drive of time variable compression mechanism can be given when the phase of the inlet cam is delayed. CONSTITUTION:A variable compression mechanism 2 consists of a variable compression cylinder 2a and a variable compression piston 2b reciprocating inside thereof, so that the variable compression piston 2b and a valve 1 can be driven via respective lifters 1f, 2f with cams 4, 5 provided on an inlet cam shaft, 3 jointed to a variable phase mechanism 6 at one end. The variable compression piston 2b is in the maximum lifted condition, or pushed most downward, at the top dead center of compression and then the displacenment of a combustion chamber formed by the variable compression mechanism 2 is in the minimum condition, When the phase of the inlet cam shaft 3 is delayed, a timing difference between the drive of the inlet valve 1 and the drive of the variable compression mechanism 2 is given to increase a compression ratio at the bottom dead point center of compression.</p> |
