New enzyme substrate for hydrolase is a 2-(2-thiazolylazo)-p-cresol deriv. of formula (I). R = a gp. derived from a glycoside or an organic or inorganic acid. Also claimed is a method for determining hydrolase activity in a sample soln., comprising: i) incubating (I) in aq. buffer with the sample soln. for a defined period; ii) visually or photometrically determining the extinction of the liberated 2-(2-thiazolyl)-p-cresol anion; and iii) determining the hydrolase activity present in the sample soln. from the extinction change per unit time. A test kit comprises (in separate compartments) a) cpd. (I); b) buffer solns.; c) a container in which to carry out the method; and d) a device for reading the colour changes.
