PURPOSE:To appropriately adjust focusing or exposure on a main object fitting in a photographing method by performing the exposure quantity control and/or focusing control of an image pickup means based on the output of a selected first or second gate means. CONSTITUTION:A frame generation circuit 27 transmits a gate timing signal to form a designated focal point detecting area to an AF evaluation value processing circuit 26 and a diaphragm control circuit 25. respectively. The opening/closing timing of gate circuits 261, 251 are controlled according to position coordinates and size information, and the focal point detecting area is set on a screen. An AF operation is performed in the AF evaluation value processing circuit 26, and an AE operation in the diaphragm control circuit 25 based on an image pickup signal in the area. Also, in a line of sight AF mode enabling the set position of the focal point detecting area on the screen to be moved by detecting a line of sight, the size of the focal point detecting area is set smaller than that of a center emphasis AF mode in which photographing is performed by fixing the focal point detecting area in the center of the screen. |
