The invention relates to a method for preventing internal cracking in timber when it is treated at temperatures in excess of 90 degrees C. According to the invention the difference between the temperature measured inside the timber and on the outside of the timber is maintained at a value of less than 30 degrees C when the timber is being treated. The said temperature difference is preferably approximately 10 - 30 degrees C. This procedure is followed both when the temperature is being increased in a heating stage, for drying the timber, for example, and when the timber is being cooled down to the starting temperature in a cooling stage. The method according to the invention can be applied to the drying of timber and to the heat treatment thereof.
