The mute has a metal body (100) with a main hollowed portion (104) including a friction portion (120) at one end for fitting into the bell mouth of the trumpet. A projection (112) of the outer end of the body is formed with a cylindrical configuration to engage inside a bowl-shaped attachment (200). The bowl is formed of flexible or semi-rigid material, e.g. leather, with a diameter similar to that of the bell mouth at its open end. An opening is formed at the base of the bowl, surrounded by a lip (206), into which the cylindrical projection of the body fits to allow relative sliding between the two components.
