PURPOSE: To provide the device and method for file management with which a desired file can be easily selected among a lot of files having the same name in one part of file names. CONSTITUTION: This device is provided with a coincidence discriminating means 104 for discriminating whether there is an icon matching with an object file or not, designation discriminating means 108 for discriminating whether merge is designated to the matching icon or not and storage discriminating means 109 for discriminating whether the display name of the matching icon is stored in a display information table 19 or not when the merge is designated and for storing the icon number and display name of the matching icon in the display information table 19 and a display means 105 in which the pattern due to bit map data in a data base 4 or an icon merge information table 30 is displayed on the pattern on a screen when the merge is not designated or when the display name of the matching icon is not stored in the display information table 19.
