In a process for cooling an object, the cooling takes place using a heat-transferring agent by means of heat transfer to a potassium formate-containing heat transferring agent. The heat-transferring agent is an aqueous solution of potassium formate in which the molar quantity of dissolved parts of potassium formate is at least 80% of the molar quantity of all the dissolved parts which lower the freezing point of the water, and agitation takes place in the heat-transferring agent when it moves relative to the object which is to be cooled. The operating temperature in at least a part of the cooling process can be less than -30 degree C, preferably less than -40 degree C.
