Winding electric tape onto large coil e.g. for current generators or transformers

The method provides a deformation free winding of electric tape to a large coil. The electric tape (2) is fed from a tape feed device (5) and is wound onto a rotating coil core (1). The core is a multiple of the width of the tape (2). The tape feeder (5) and the core (1) are movable relative to each other parallel to the core axis. The rotation rate of the core (1) and the relative axial speed between the core (1) and the feeder (5) are computer controlled to be tuned to each other such that the tape (2) is wound in oscillations into successive closely wound layers. At the ends of the large coil the direction of the axial relative movement between the core (1) and the tape feeder (5) is reversed. At least during the last rotation of the core (1) before initiating the direction change at the ends of the large coil, the axial relative speed between the core (1) and the feeder (5) is accelerated for a short time.
