The press compartment (14) is formed of two continuous belts (13) running over rollers (11,12,20,21). The shape of the bale in two side parts of the outer casing is detected by an appliance coming into contact with the conveyor belts and consisting of a pressure roller (22) freely pivot mounted between, and parallel to, two rollers (20,21). The pressure roller extends the entire width of the bale press compartment and is attached to the sides (7) of the bale press compartment so that it swivels in swivel bearings (33) positioned diagonally to the pressure roller's centre axis at right angles to the conveyor belts' direction of rotation.
