摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fine display by impressing a uniform electric field to liquid crystal molecules in a cell thickness direction in a liquid crystal display electro-optical device for controlling the direction of liquid crystal molecules by an electric field applied in parallel with the surface of a substrate. SOLUTION: The device has a pair of substrates 100, 101 at least one of which is transparent, a liquid crystal layer arranged between a pair of the substrates 100, 101 and polarizing means 106, 107 for visualizing the electro- optical effect of liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer. Pixel electrodes 102 and common electrodes 103 capable of forming electric fields including a direction parallel with the surfaces of the substrates 100, 101 are formed on one substrate 101 out of the substrates 100, 101 and these electrodes 102, 103 are formed like walls having prescribed height. Electric fields similar to that formed around the substrate 101 are impressed to liquid crystal molecules existing near the opposite substrate 100 by the wall-like electrodes 102, 103, so that, contrast, the rise of display and a response characteristic is improved.
