The invention relates to plastic filler pieces, process for the preparation thereof and bioreactors containing them, which can be used in microbiological and chemical purification and production processes. The filler pieces are substantially uncompressible rough lumps of irregular shape which consist predominantly of polypropylene or a mixture of polypropylene and at least one other polyolefin. They are preferably prepared by melting recycled plastic and by injecting water into the melted plastic.
