The invention is related to a process for the obtainment of stable 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutric acid (=hydroxy analog of the methionine MHA) during storage in primary free form by distillation of a solution of a product that contains MHA and the obtainment from a distillate of this product mixture type that contains MHA with improved stabilities during storgage. The distillate can be obtained either directly from the raw MHA products that eventually still have dissolvent or water by means of any MHA preparation process or from a MHA commercial product.
