The bus system supports a range of function modules (4), e.g. sensors, indicators, etc. that are plug in items into bus couplers (2). Built into the coupler is a memory cell (9) containing a type number that is obtained from the function module. The module has a user program (7) that exchanges data with the communication program (11) of the bus coupler. This allows any module removal to be identified and signalled.
