A transducer for measuring torque in a rotating shaft at least partially surrounded by a fixed housing. The transducer comprises an optical displacement sensing means, an optical transmission means, and an optical-electric converter means. The optical displacement sensing means residing on the shaft and modulating a light signal input to provide a light signal output relating to the magnitude of torque. The light signal output communicated to the optical-electric converter means via the optical transmission means. The optical transmission means comprising an optical clock spring, the optical-electric converter means either mounted to the housing or external to the housing. The optical clock spring comprising one or more flexible fiber optical cables, each cable arranged to be of sufficient length to allow the measurement of the magnitude of torque over a predetermined angular range of rotation of the shaft and the optical-electric converter means thereby providing an electrical output signal relating to the magnitude of the torque in the shaft.
|
