Any pollution in the water stream (7') causes the fish contained in the main vessel (4) to behave in an unusual way, either increasing or decreasing their activity. Their movements are detected by piezoelectric detectors (18, 18' and 18) positioned around the vessel and linked via amplifiers (19) and filters (20) to a computer (22). An alarm (26) is set off when abnormal movements are detected. The water vessel (1) is divided into three compartments. In the first (13) the water temperature is adjusted, using a heating or cooling coil (11) to bring it to the correct temperature for the fish. The fish are held in the main part of the vessel (4) and water discharged via an overflow (13) in the outlet compartment (5). The compartments are connected by means which allow water to pass without turbulence. An Independent claim is included for an installation for detecting pollution using the above method.
