PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a binary shape signal encoding device which adaptively encodes a binary shape signal according to the spacial correlation between the binary pixels forming the binary shape signal. SOLUTION: This device includes a means 180 which calculates the progressive correlation showing the correlation between the pixels of a binary block consisting of (M×N) pixels, a means 190 which calculates the interlace correlation showing the correlation between the pixels included in an upper field consisting of pixel lines of even-numbered rows of the binary block and also the correlation between the pixels included in a lower field consisting of pipelines of an odd-numbered rows of the binary block, a means 300 which encodes every block unit by a progressive shape encoding technique, a means 400 which encodes every field unit by an interlaced shape encoding technique, and a mode decision means 160 which compares the progressive correlation with the interlaced correlation to produce a mode selection signal and decides which encoding means 300 or 400 is used for encoding. |
