PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel compound being mercaptobenzoate and used to stabilize a chlorine-containing polymer against heat decomposition. SOLUTION: There is provided a compound of formula I(n is 2, 3, 4, or 6; when n is 2, X is a phenyl-substituted 2-12C alkylene or a 2-12C alkylene interrupted by a sulfur atom, when n is 3, X is formula II or a 3-7C alkanetriyl, when n is 4, X is a 4-10C alkanetetrayl, formula III or formula IV, and when n is 6, X is formula V; and the SH group may be in the ortho, meta, or para position). This compound can be produced, for example, by the esterification of the corresponding mercaptobenzoic acid or, in the case where X is a 4-20C alkyl, the transesterification of methyl mercaptobenzoate or ethyl mercaptobenzoate. |
