PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a terminal device for portable telephone set equipped with a character input device which can be made small-sized and simplified in opera tion by retrieving a character by scrolling displayed characters through button operation and inputting the character by selecting the desired character and determining the character. SOLUTION: An input means is composed of a seesaw key, which is equipped with a 1st button 8a) and a 2nd button (b) oppositely with respect to a center line. By operating the 1st button (a) and/or 2nd button (b) which can be shifted independently, a user retrieves a character by scrolling characters displayed on a display means forward or backward. Further, the character input is done by selecting and deciding a desired character by operating the 1st button (a) or 2nd button (b). This device switches longitudinal and lateral scrolling operations when detecting the 1st button 8a) and 2nd button (b) being pressed at the same time.
