PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which can obtain a monochromatic color display with new display feeling. SOLUTION: The device is equipped with a liquid crystal element 10, a polarizing plate 20 disposed on the front side of the element 10, and a selective reflecting element 21 consisting of a cholesteric liquid crystal disposed on the back side of the liquid crystal element 10. The light from the front side passing through the polarizing plate 20 and entering the liquid crystal element 10 is converted into right-hand circularly polarized light I2 or left-hand circularly polarized light I2' by changing the alignment of liquid crystal molecules according to the voltage applied between the electrode 13, 14 of the element 10 to exit to the back side of the liquid crystal element 10. The light having one of the right-hand and left-hand circularly polarized light components and in a specified wavelength region is reflected by the selective reflecting element 21 to obtain a metallic color display, while other light components are passed through the selective reflecting element 21 to exit to the back side to obtain a black display. |
