PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laminated optical element having a plurality of optical functions such as polarizing and optically compensating functions and so on and being excellent in thinness and lightness in weight. SOLUTION: The laminated optical element comprises a laminated body having a polarizing layer (2) with <=5μm thickness and one or more layers of birefringent layers (4, 41, 42) composed of a solid film of an aligned liquid crystal or a polymer layer containing the aligned liquid crystal. The liquid crystal display device is provided with the laminated optical element on at least one side of the liquid crystal display panel. The laminated optical element which comprises the birefringent layer composed of the aligned liquid crystal formed on the polarizing layer in an adhered and superimposed state if necessary via an alignment layer and is a polarizing layer excellent in thinness, which is also excellent in thinness and lightness in weight as a whole and which exhibits a plurality of the optical functions such as the polarizing function based on the polarizing layer and the optically compensating function based on the birefringent layer and/or improvement of brightness and so on, is obtained.
