PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing element having high transmittance of light and sufficient degree of polarization. SOLUTION: The polarizing element includes a reflective polarizing layer 11 and a phase difference layer 15 laminated so that the surface of the reflective polarizing layer 11 opposing the phase difference layer 15 is inclined to one direction corresponding to the phase difference layer 15. A portion of the incident light from the out side of the phase difference layer 15 having a polarization component along the transmission axis of the reflective polarizing layer 11 is transmitted and emitted from the reflective polarizing layer 11. The other incident light (the light has the polarization component along the reflection axis of the reflective polarizing layer 11) reflected on the reflective polarizing layer 11 is directed into the phase difference layer 15, and then the light is reflected on the inner surface of the phase difference layer 15 and the polarization condition of the light is varied by phase difference of the phase different layer 15. Then, the light having varied polarization component is directed into the reflective polarizing layer 11, transmitted through the reflective polarizing layer 11 and emitted out. |
