A correction value calculating method of a reading apparatus comprising an image pickup element in which a plurality of pixels are arranged along a first direction and a shading correction device configured to correct variation of reading values of the plurality of pixels using a correction value for shading correction, the correction value calculating method comprising:
a reading value acquiring step of acquiring reading values at respective pixels for respective reading positions at both ends of a reading range of a reference member and reading values at respective two or more pixels for respective reading positions in the reading range except the reading positions, and reading values for respective two or more reading positions at the respective pixels while relatively moving the image pickup element and the reference member which becomes a reference for shading correction in the first direction; and a correction value calculating step of calculating the correction value for shading correction based on the acquired reading values.
