PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a liquid crystal device applicable to a picture display device which carries out a display by increasing the apparent number of pixels of a picture display element to twice its true number, to suppress lowering of the utilization factor of the light and to attain a picture display with high quality. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device is provided with a liquid crystal layer 2 of which the distribution of refractive indexes is controlled with voltage application between two sheets of transparent substrates 1 with a comb shaped electrode array 3 formed thereon and an optical path deflection driving means 5 which varies a state of voltage application to the comb shaped electrode array 3 and a Fresnel lens is obtained by controlling the applied voltage. The liquid crystal layer 2 contains a polymer polymerized and hardened by a polymerizing and hardening agent, and a liquid crystal. In driving the liquid crystal with the voltage application, the liquid crystal is reoriented by the electric field so that the first stable state with no applied electric field is shifted to the desired second state. In recovering the orientation of liquid crystal molecules from the second state to the first state in driving, response speed of the element with the liquid crystal layer construction is far and away improved compared with the case the recovering of the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules is carried out only with alignment controllability of an alignment layer.
