PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating apparatus in which the initial coating loss is reduced by automatically judging the coating performance in the coating apparatus for applying a coating liquid on a belt-like supporting body continuously transported from the upstream to the downstream using an extrusion type coater and a coating method using the coating apparatus. SOLUTION: In the coating apparatus discharging the coating liquid supplied from a coating liquid supply part from a slit of the extrusion type coater and applying it on the belt-like supporting body continuously transported from the upstream to the down stream, a coating performance detecting means for detecting the coating performance directly after the coating is provided on the down stream side of the coating part and a control means for controlling a moving means for the extrusion type coater, a cleaning means for the extrusion type coater and a liquid feeding means for the coating material from the coating liquid supply part based on the information of the coating performance detecting means is provided.
