PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contents reproducing apparatus which can properly protect optional contents from interference by other parties and by which every one can freely reproduce other contents. SOLUTION: A hard disk 30 has the television images of a plurality of programs recorded thereon. The images include those recorded in a common mode and those recorded in a personal mode. An optional code is attached to the images recorded in the personal mode as a password. When an operation key 34 is used to enter an optional code, a CPU 32 enters the personal mode. In this case, the reproducing apparatus can reproduce only the image to which the entered code is attached.
