PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a spline of a sheet metal rotary member having a boss part, by which the thickness of a sheet metal is avoided from increasing more than necessary to attain weight reduction while ensuring the strength of the boss part, the spline forming time is shortened to enhance the manufacturing efficiency, and the occurrence of chips is eliminated to avoid adverse effect on the environment. SOLUTION: An annular surplus part 7 is raised in the direction of the axis C of the boss part 2, the boss part 2 of the sheet metal rotary member 1 with a root part 8 and a circumferential edge part 3 of the boss part 2 displaced in advance is fitted to a boss part fitting hole 9B of a rotary member holding die 9, a spline-formed male die 10 is inserted in the boss part 2, and set to a fixed die 11, the annular surplus part 7 is held by a pushing die 12 and the fixed die 11, and deformed flat, and the root part 8 of the boss part 2 is pressed into a spline forming groove 10C to form the plastically deformed boss side spline 5.
