PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out optimum printing while even papers other than a predetermined paper is controlled through a thermal history. SOLUTION: A standard thermal history time parameter and a standard thermal history pulse width parameter are set as initial values, and pre-printing is carried out to a recording medium while a thermal head is controlled through a thermal history on the basis of the set parameters. A pre-printed printing state is detected by an image scanner, and data of the detected printing state is compared with preliminarily set printing standard data to obtain a difference. When the detected printing state is within a standard state, the parameters used at the time are determined as final thermal history parameters to be used for normal printing. When the detected printing state is not within the standard state, the parameters are changed and pre-printing is carried out again, which is repeated until the printing state is within the standard state.
