A grid cleaning system for a solid fuel fired boiler, e.g. for burning pelleted fuel from replaceable sources, has a comb shaped scraper fitted under the grid with the teeth of the scraper set between the grid bars. The scraper is mounted on a horizontal bar (63) which is positioned through the front of boiler via holes and which is pushed to and fro manually to clean the grid. Removed clinker and ash drops into an ash tray (66) from where it is periodically dropped into an ash bin (16) via a trap door.
