5,5'-Disubstituted 2,2'-bis-(disubstituted phosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl derivatives (I) (including corresponding diphosphine dioxides) are new. Diphosphines or diphosphine dioxides of formula (I), in racemic or optically active form, are new. n = 0 or 1; R1, R2 = H or substituent; Ar1, Ar2 = alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl; X1, X2 = alkyl (optionally substituted by one or more of halo (preferably F) nitro or amino), alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, Cl, Br, I, OH, OCORa, ORa, SRa, CN, CH2NH2, COOH, COORa, CH2OH, CONHRb, CH2NHCORb, CH2NHCONHRb, CH2N=CHRa, NH2, NHRa, N(Ra)2, N=CHRa, NHNH2, -N3, Mg or Li; Ra = alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or phenyl; Rb = Ra or polycyclic aryl; and provided that both values of n are both 0 or both 1.
