PURPOSE: A method for judging an optical disk is provided to measure an RF signal while operating a focus servo, and to judge a kind of an optical disk, thereby preventing the kind of the optical disk from being incorrectly recognized owing to pickup distributions. CONSTITUTION: A system mounts an optical disk on a tray(400). The system decides whether a kind of the mounted optical disk is a CD or a DVD(401). If the kind of the mounted optical disk is the DVD(402), the system decides whether a focus error signal is more than a reference value(403). If so, the system controls size of a focus error(404). The system controls an optical power, and outputs a certain RF signal(405). The system decodes whether the outputted RF signal is more than a reference value(406). If so, the system decides the kind of the optical disk as a DVD-ROM or a DVD+/-R(407). If the RF signal is not bigger than the reference value, the system decides the kind as a DVD+/-RW(408).
