A hot formed and press hardened structural and/or safety element for a motor vehicle is formed from a high strength steel with a zinc-based corrosion-resistant coating. The protective coating comprises an alloy of iron and zinc produced by a process of solid material diffusion and has a thickness of less than of less than 10 Microm. An independent claim is also included for the production of the above structural and/or safety element by heat treatment and with a spray of sherardizing (sic) powder.
