摘要 A waveguide polarization rotator includes a substrate having a surface and a waveguide coupled to the surface of the substrate and operable to support a light beam along a direction of beam propagation. The waveguide includes a slab having a support surface and a second surface opposing the support surface and a rib protruding from the second surface of the slab in a direction substantially normal to the surface of the substrate and extending along the direction of beam propagation. The rib includes a first portion extending to a first height above the second surface of the slab and a second portion adjacent to the first portion and extending to a second height above the second surface of the slab. The second height is less than the first height.

A waveguide polarization rotator for reciprocal polarization rotation comprising: a substrate comprising silicon; a waveguide comprising silicon operable to support a light beam along a direction of beam propagation, wherein the waveguide comprises: a slab having a support surface and a second surface opposing the support surface; anda rib protruding from the second surface of the slab in a direction substantially normal to a surface of the substrate and extending along the direction of beam propagation, wherein: the rib is of the same material as the slab; andthe rib comprises: a first portion extending to a first height above the second surface of the slab and extending for a predetermined length, at the first height, in the direction of beam propagation;a second portion adjacent to the first portion and extending to a second height above the second surface of the slab, characterized by a width at the second height, and extending for the predetermined length, at the second height, in the direction of beam propagation, wherein the second height is less than the first height; anda third portion adjacent to the second portion and extending to a third height above the second surface of the slab, characterized by a width at the third height, and extending for the predetermined length, at the third height, in the direction of beam propagation, wherein the third height is less than the second height;the predetermined length is such that a polarization of a light beam propagating through the waveguide in the direction of beam propagation is rotated by a predetermined angle; anda beam of light propagating through the waveguide in reverse of the direction of beam propagation is rotated by an angle opposite of the predetermined angle; and an insulating layer disposed between the substrate and the waveguide, wherein the insulating layer comprises an oxide material.
