1398175 Aromatic aldehydes SNAMPROGETTI SpA 17 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 53371/72 Heading C2C Aromatic aldehydes or esterified or acetalized derivatives thereof are produced by a process which comprises subjecting an aromatic olefin having the formula Ar-(CH 2 ) n -CH=CH 2 wherein Ar is an aromatic group and n is 0 or an integer from 1 to 8, to mild oxidation with a salt of Pd in the oxidation state II or with a salt of a metal in an oxidation state isoelectronic with Pd<SP>II</SP> in an anhydrous medium and in the presence of ions of the formula AcO- or RO- wherein Ac is an acyl group and R is an alkyl radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms. Examples of metals isoelectronic with Pd<SP>II</SP> are Tl<SP>III</SP> and Pb<SP>IV</SP>. The aldehyde or its derivative may be connected to produce an aromatic amino acid by the Strecker reaction. |
