[Also in Division B3] The Specification relates to improvements in semi-conductor device encapsulations of the general type illustrated in Fig. 1 in which the element is disposed on a conductive base 10 within a peripheral wall 18 to the upper edge of which cap assembly 12 is welded. In each case a flange 40 on the cap assembly is welded to this edge with the aid of one or more weld members of closed configuration which, prior to welding have weld ridges engaging both members to be joined thereby. In one example, two weld members of annular configuration and diamondshaped cross-section are used, one between the peripheral wall 18 and spring retaining member 22 and the other between member 22 and the flange 40 of the cap assembly. Alternatively, the weld members may be of triangular crosssection or formed of a plurality of coils of wire. In another embodiment the retaining member is held in position by an annular member welded between the cap and peripheral wall. In a modification of this embodiment the annular member functions as a welding member and to this end has annular ridges on both faces. Resistance welding is effected in two stages in all cases by clamping the parts to be joined between a pair of electrodes, one of which may be recessed to accommodate the ridge on the annular member referred to above. |
