White pigment consists of a phosphate of formula (I) contg. at least 0.1% of a water soluble cpd. M'O2. xY. (0.1 is approx. 1.5 + mx/2) P2O5 (I) M2On/2 (II) (where M' is Si, Ti and Zr; Y is a nitrogen base or the oxide of formula (II); M2 is an alkali (ne earth) metal, Al, Pb or Zn; n is the valence of M2; x is a 1-6; and m is 1 when Y is a nitrogen base, or is n when Y is (II). The pigment is cheap and combines a high degree of whiteness with an excellent fire and corrosion resistance. Used in flame-retarding paints and rust-resisting paints. A soln. of TiCl4 and a soln. of orthophosphoric acid were supplied to a reactor to form a white gel. of Ti phosphate, the molar ratio of TiO2:P2O5 being 1:1. The pdt. was calcined for 1 hr. at 400 degrees C, and ground in a ball mill. The pigment consisted essentially of TiP2O7.
|
