A container for liquefied gas, e.g. natural gas, methane, oxygen and nitrogen, comprises a holder 14 disposed within a cavity 12 in the earth, the holder 14 including a single prestressed concrete side wall 19 and an insulating cover 28. A layer of load-bearing insulation 20 is covered by a liner 22 which is impermeable to the gas. The liner 22 may be made of aluminium, 9% nickel steel alloy, stainless steel, copper or plastic; it is secured to the wall 19 by members 32 welded on to the liner, and has expansion bends 29. The wall 19 is reinforced and is prestressed by vertically and horizontally extending wires or bands 46 which are covered by a layer of mortar 48. The holder 14 has a base 26 comprising a reinforced concrete wall 30, insulation 20 and a liner 22, and a cover wall 30, insulation 20 and a liner 22, and a cover 28 comprising a reinforced concrete panel 52, a liner 58, insulation 54 and a layer of mortar 56. Expansion joints 36 and 70 are provided at the corner of the holder. In alternative constructions, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the liner 22 is disposed between the insulation 20 and the wall 19 or between the latter and the wires or bands 46. In another construction, Fig. 4 (not shown), the wall 19 is the innermost member of the holder, the line 22 being mounted on the wall and surrounded by the wires or bands 46 around which is disposed the insulation layer 20, a water repellent coating being provided on the outside of the holder. The coating may be tar paper, mastic coating, petrolatum or a film of plastic. The holder may be enclosed in the earth. |
