Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1107738/C2/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, bromoaryl, carboxylic acyl or aralkyl group, the R groups being the same or different, are obtained by hydrogenating an olefinic compound of the formula <FORM:1107738/C2/2> under conditions such that both the olefinic and ketonic groups are reduced, one or both of the hydroxyl groups on the benzene ring optionally being etherified or acylated before or after the hydrogenation. The compounds may be separated into two diastereoisomers. Therapeutic compositions having estrogenic and growth-promoting properties and useful for promoting the growth of meat-producing animals, contain the above compounds as active ingredient. The composition may be in a form suitable for oral or parenteral application, e.g. as a constituent of an animal foodstuff (see Division A5).
