<p>1360076 Surface modified carbon composites PROGIL 1 Dec 1971 [31 Dec 1970] 55826/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division Cl] A composite material, e.g. a laminate, consists of a heterogeneous assembly of two or more material of which at least one forms a continuous medium (the matrix) and the other serves as a reinforcement and consists of or comprises carbon in which at least a part of the surface has been subjected to cathodic sputtering caused by ionic bombardment. The treated carbon may be in the form of fibres, fibrils, films, tapes or sheets. The matrix is preferably a thermosetting resin such as a bisphenol A diepoxide resin or a triehoxidized trimethylolpropane cured with diethylenetriamine. The treatment of the carbon is effected by using the carbon article as the cathode in the presence of a discharge gas and a direct current voltage of from 500 to 10,000 volts. The discharge gas may be a rare gas such as argon or krypton or a reactive gas, e.g. oxygen or nitrogen, or water vapour. Exemplified composites are carbon sheets treated by bombardment and united with a thin layer of bisphenol A diepoxide resin cured with diethylenetriamine at room temperature and 80‹C, and carbon fibres treated by bombardment admixed with triepoxidised trimethylolpropane and cured with diethylenetriamine.</p> |
