The surfaces of two articles to be bonded together are pre-coated with a slow curing resin (e.g. epoxy) having a low exothermal property and which bonds well to the surfaces, and the space between the two layers is filled with a rapid curing resin (e.g. polyester) which has a high exothermal property, and which bonds well to the coatings. The rapid curing resin may have a fibrous or particulate filler, and the filler may be in the form of a felt which is pre-impregnated with a catalyst. The rapid curing resin maybe injected into the gap between the coatings or the joint may be surrounded by a mould into which the rapid curing resin is injected. The method is used for securing together pipes or cables or for attaching metal articles to concrete. A good joint is achieved rapidly without external heat because the heat given off during curing of the rapid curing resin assists curing of the slow curing resin.
|
