The stalks of the crop, such as maize, are positioned in a row, and are gripped by the coiled strips of the pick-up device. The stalks are then cut by a cutter close to the ground, and conveyed to an intake duct. Separator plates help to convey the crop to the intake duct. Badly bent stalks that lie on top of the separator plates are cut up by a rotating disc with blades on it. The cutter disc is driven by means of a chain on an intake-roller. The cutter blades pass close to a counter-cutter.
