Toothed coupling for change speed gear - provides synchromesh change without close tolerances by floating baulk ring

The gear box output shaft carries the first gear and second gear mounted on needle roller bearings. The synchromesh baulk rings are fitted on either side of the compensating ring which can slide axially on the shaft in the grooves which are close fit in the vertical direction but allow limited lateral play in the horizontal direction. The periphery of the compensating ring has two diametrically opposite projections which engage in grooves in the gear change muff with a radial clearance in the vertical direction. This allows the compensating ring to "float" avoiding the need for close tolerances.
