The evaluator output is connected to input a of an analog store 512 which stores a comparison signal generated when a space between cigarettes is located in front of the electrodes under the control of timing pulses from a generator 513 synchronised with the drive of the end scanning drum 429 carrying the cigarettes. A device 518 forms the difference between a measurement signal from the evaluator and a stored comparison signal and transmits it to a threshold detector 476 via an AND gate 519 receiving also a clock pulse from a generator 521 indicative of the presence of a cigarette in front of the electrodes. If the difference is greater than the threshold value a fault signal is transmitted via register 477 to actuate removal of a defective cigarette by air blown through a pipe 452. Fig. 4 (not shown) includes an arrangement whereby the two pulse generators are substituted by a circuit sensing minima and maxima of the evaluated signal.
