Composite panels comprise a core layer of wood chips or other cellulosic particles or fibres bonded by a binder resin consisting of prod. of co-condensation of urea, melamine, phenol and formaldehyde, and external layers bound by a phenol-formaldehyde resin condensed under alkaline conditions. Panels are useful for mfr. of furniture. The panels have a relatively low swelling index, even if exposed to boiling water. The alkaline condensate in the surface layers offers good resistance to moisture penetration. The phenolic component in the core material binder enhances the interfacial compatibility with the binder in the surface layer, inhibiting delamination if the surface is stressed. Cheaper than use of slow curing alkaline condensate throughout.
|
