1435879 Sanding machines H STAHL [trading as S M MASCHINENFABRIK HERBERT STAHL] 23 Aug 1974 [24 Aug 1973] 37262/74 Heading B3D [Also in Division B5] A contact pulley for a belt sanding machine comprises a plurality of axially adjacently disposed layers of material of which at least one layer 41 consists of soft, resilient material clamped under pre-stress between two layers 42 of firmer material, whereby at rest said soft and firmer material layers have the same diameter, but said soft material swells radially beyond the diameter of the said firmer material layers 42 upon rotation of the pulley and also expands axially over the width of the periphery of the pulley to provide a flexible contact surface for a sanding belt. The soft material may be foam plastics or foam rubber; the firmer material may be textile material, cotton canvas, or aluminium. The soft material is compressed before being fixed to the firmer material. The layers are held together by textile threads 43, and they may be adhered together before machine sewing.
