The prodn. of alkoxylated N-methylolcarbonamide cpds. (I) comprises reacting an N-methylolated carbonamide cpd. (II) with an alkylene oxide (III) of the formula: (in which R is H, 1-3C alkyl, phenyl or in the presence of metal alcoholate(s) (IV) of the formula Me(O-X)r(Q)n-r (in which Me is an n-valent gp. IV, V or VI transition metal; X is 1-4C (halo)alkyl, phenyl, benzyl or cycloalkyl with max. 12 ring C atoms; Q is halogen or 1-4C alkoxy; r is 1 to n; n is 4, 5 or 6) and opt. alkali metal hydroxide(s) (Va) or alcoholate(s) (Vb) of a 1-4C alkanol at a temp. of 10-160 degrees C and a pressure of 1-20 at. g. (I) are used as reactive surfactants, which are converted to an irreversible insol. state under certain conditions, e.g. in acid reactions or higher temp. They can be used in the prodn. of microcapsules and as detergent (additive), emulsifier, dispersant, waterproofing agent (additive), hydrophilising soft-handling agent or carrier. The asymmetrical diether cpds. with at least one hydrophobic and hydrophilic gp. are esp. valuable reactive surfactants. Reaction takes place under mild conditions.
